Biography

Professor Marco Metra is an associate professor of cardiology at the University of Brescia, as of December 2015, directs the Institute of Cardiology of the Civil Hospital and University of Brescia, Italy, since November 2012, and is Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Heart Failure, since November 2015. He has been appointed President-elect of the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology starting from 1 September 2022. 

Prof. Metra received his medical degree in 1981 and then received the post-graduate fellowships in Internal Medicine and in Cardiology, at the University of Parma. He was a research associate at the Committee on Clinical Pharmacology of the University of Chicago, Illinois, (Director, Prof. Leon I. Goldberg), in 1985, returning to work at the Cardiology Institute of the University of Brescia in 1986. He was appointed Associate Professor of Cardiology in 2001 and then became Full Professor of Cardiology in 2015 at the University of Brescia.

Prof. Metra has been principal investigator and member of the Executive or Steering Committees of many trials in patients with heart failure. He is co-chair of the 2021 ESC Guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic heart failure and the 2023 ESC HF guidelines update. 

Prof Metra served as board member of the HFA of ESC from 2001 to 2008, being secretary of the executive board from 2004 to 2006, and then served as ex-officio member of the HFA board from 2015 and then as President elect since 2022. He has also been a member of the ESC’s Committee for Practice Guidelines in the years 2004 to 2008, member of the ESC Congress Program Committee in the years 2008-2012 and 2023.
